Defending Champions Gunn-Rita Dahle-Flesjaa and Fabian Giger, as well as the Olympic Champions, Jaroslav Kulhavy and Sabine Spitz, will start the 21st Afxentia stage race in Lefkara, Cyprus, this week. With the 14.6 kilometre opening time trial from Lefkara to Skarinou, the athletes from 25 nations will begin the early season test, which ends on Sunday with the cross-country race in Mantra tou Kampiou.
Fabian Giger (Kross Racing) has already won the HC-class Afxentia three times (2013, 2014 and 2016), and is therefore somewhat the unofficial Champion of the traditional event. And he is one of the favorites this year.
For the eighth consecutive time, Fabian Giger will use the Cyprus Sunshine Cup to kick-off his season. We talked with the World-class Swiss rider about the past Olympic season, his goals for 2017 and his affinity with Cyprus.
Last weekend Giger returned from a training camp in Spain where, with an eye on the Afxentia stage race, he clocked up many road miles and tested equipment with his Polish Kross Racing Team.
Rio Road Race Olympic gold medalist, Anna van der Breggen, has announced her plans for the Afxentia stage race. In addition to the Dutchwoman, the complete CST Sandd American Eagle Team of Bart Brentjens have confirmed their participation, as well as World-class Frenchman, Jordan Sarrou.
