Men: Van der Poel takes dramatic stage
Women: German battle goes to Brandau

Second day of the Afxentia stage race offered a lot of action. After 48 kilometer cyclo cross specialist Mathieu van der Poel won his very first mountain bike race one second in front of Fabian Giger and four seconds in front of the new overall leader Grant Ferguson. In the women’s competition finally Elisabeth Brandau won her second stage 10 seconds in front of Adelheid Morath, both Germany. Jovana Crnogorac took third place, 2:21 back.

20 riders reached together the highest point of the stage, the first tech zone of the race, 18 kilometer were behind them. In the downhill the group lost only some riders until second feed zone at kilometer 25. Then, followed by another downhill, behind the third technical zone Mathieu van der Poel (BKCP-Corendon), 13 kilometers to go, used a small uphill section for an attack. The 21 years old Dutch escaped, also due to the fact that nobody in the group wanted to lead the chase.

Florian Vogel takes it again
German sweep on the ladies podium

On a warm and sunny day in Lefkara, Cyprus, the Swiss title defender Florian Vogel won the opening time trial of the 20th Afxentia stage race. Vogel took it by only 0,2 seconds in front of Grant Ferguson (Gbr). Surprisingly the third place went to Marcel Guerrini (Sui). Also a surprise, what happened in women’s competition. The three German ladies Elisabeth Brandau, Sabine Spitz and Adelheid Morath occupied the podium.
