Registrations for the Volkswagen Cyprus Cycling Tour 2016 - Now Open
The town and region of Pafos will play host to the prestigious road cycling event that will run between April 1st and 3rd
For the fifth straight year, between April 1st and 3rd 2016, the Volkswagen Cyprus Cycling Tour will take place. The registration for the race is now open for all. The 2016 event will feature important changes, compared to previous years, such as longer timed sections and Pafos hosting the entire tour. The start for all three days is set in front of the coastal town’s medieval castle.
The Volkswagen Cyprus Cycling Tour is the most important road cycling event that takes place on the island. In 2015 a record number of 224 participants passed the start line, a number which is expected to succumb to next year’s entries. Almost half of the participants last year were from abroad, many of them semi-professional. It is estimated that the 2015 race offered Pafos around 1200 night stays in various hotels, during the tourist offseason as well.
Michalis Hadjioannou of the organizers Bikin’ Cyprus Events (who also host the Cyprus Sunshine Cup) spoke about the upcoming changes to the VW Cycling Tour: “We have decided to move the start of the event from Limassol to Pafos, so the race will be more compact and to promote even more the natural beauty of the region. In the same time the participants will not be forced to move as much as the last years. All three days of competition will start at the Pafos castle, while two out of three of the daily stages are now longer”.
Three stages for the three days of the VW Cycling Tour (1-3 of April) are scheduled. The total distance is 247.4 kilometres, of which 191 km are timed sections.
On Friday April 1st 2016 the riders will move for 21 km towards Kouklia, where they will then enter the 74.5 km timed stage that will lead them to Kourion and then back to Kouklia.
On Saturday April 2nd, following 20 km towards Kouklia, the timed stage will open with a total distance of 68.9 km. The cyclists will move towards Dora, Arsos, Ayios Nikolaos and finish at Kouklia.
Finally, on day 3 (Sunday April 3rd) the athletes will bike for 15.4 km towards Peyia and then will enter the timed stage of 47.6 km with its finish at Tsada, via Kathikas and Stroumbi.
The VW Cycling Tour is open for all either pros, semi pros or amateurs. The organizers are particularly encouraging the participation of amateurs, assisting them in various ways, such as transport and equipment.

Cyprus is a biker’s paradise and it’s not just because of the guaranteed sunshine. Granted the excellent weather conditions prevailing on the island, cycling can be enjoyed almost throughout the year and unlike other European or Mediterranean countries, strong headwinds are rare.
But it is the island’s compactness that is its main attraction, offering rapid changes of terrain and scenery on even the shortest cycling routes. Within the space of 10 km you can go from steep to flat, enabling you to experience all surfaces within a short period of time, and making the island into one huge cycling arena.
A number of bike centres, such as our sister company Bikin'Cyprus Adventures, are available on the island offering rental services, route information, guide assistance and support. They can organise your journey to take you through a varied landscape combining mountain views, rugged coastlines, tranquil vineyards and olive groves and fascinating ancient ruins.
As many participants will like to stay close with their family and friends during the Volkswagen Cyprus Cycling Tour 2016, we have organized special family arrangements for accommodation and entertainment. The arrangements contain accommodation in the same hotels as the participants.
The transportation from town to town where the tour goes, will be organized with buses and will combine a special excursion in Rural Cyprus so as to create a different experience for the family. More information for the family and friends packages you can find in our accommodation section.
Also, if you like to have an extended stay in Cyprus to enjoy your holiday before or after the event there are various Hotels to choose from with special prices for the participants and their friends and families.
